Greetings

Bettina Forget

In recent weeks, Carl Sagan’s iconic quote from his book Pale Blue Dot keeps coming to my mind:

The Earth is a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena. Think of the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals and emperors so that in glory and triumph they could become the momentary masters of a fraction of a dot. […]

To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly with one another and to preserve and cherish the pale blue dot, the only home we've ever known.

This much-cited passage illustrates that a change of perspective can foster poignant insights. Scientists and artists are especially adept at this kind of meta-thinking, inspired by their shared appreciation of nature and their penchant for critical inquiry. And as long as we have that, there’s hope for the future.

Peace,
Bettina

Artist Spotlight

Daedelus (Alfred Darlington): What does the future sound like?

Daedelus is a trailblazing artist, DJ, and producer, who has been active in electronic music for the past 20 years. They have been at the forefront of many ground-breaking performance techniques, from working with early prototypical Monome controllers to cutting edge modular systems, as well as A/V shows that are robotic, volumetric, and interactive. Their SETI AIR project (un)Earthed is a sonic experience that immerses the listener in the SETI Institute’s ongoing search for technosignals. As part of this creative work, Daedelus has released a sample pack of space sounds that are meant to update the outmoded synth effects so often used in electronic music and video production.

Atlas
This NFT series is based on data collected with an antenna that is installed in Hong Kong. It captures the radio signals of three retired NOAA satellites that pass over the city approximately four times a day. The images are taken as the satellites pass overhead and are broadcasted back to the ground in real-time.
