Data Science

Where there's data, there's data analysis! Data Science spans all the other disciplines at the SETI Institute. Whether one is characterizing sand dunes on Mars or detecting extrasolar planets, there's data that requires utilizing current and emerging computational technologies to make our grand discoveries.

The SETI Institute Data Science team plays a central role in the data processing pipelines for both NASA's Kepler and TESS science processing pipelines. We also actively develop pipelines for several other projects. We are developing an automated exploding meteor detection pipeline for NASA's Planetary Defense Coordination Office and also developing pipelines for NASA's Intelligent Long Endurance Observing System (ILEOS) satellite pipeline, the NOAA GOES satellite GeoNEX project and the TOLIMAN exoplanet finding mission. We are also involved in several other data analysis projects at the SETI Institute.

Our team provides and assists with computing needs at the SETI Institute by directly offering computing resource assistance, such as with the Google Cloud Platform or the NASA Advanced Supercomputer Facility, as well as offering guidance to other researchers on suggested computational methods and addressing their high-performance computing needs. Strong collaborations are critical to scientific discovery. The SETI Institute Data Science discipline also brings together data science and machine learning expertise with domain science expertise by organizing intense summer research sprints. Previously known as the Frontier Development Lab (FDL), the new Space Science AI Laboratory (SSAIL) will organize summer programs to pair domain scientists with data scientists to tackle forefront challenges in SETI Institute-related questions.
