Biography

Dr. Joe Bright is the Project Scientist for the Allen Telescope Array at the SETI Institute, bringing expertise in radio astronomy, transient astrophysics, and telescope commissioning to the only radio telescope built specifically for SETI. His research focuses on the dynamic radio sky, including transient and variable phenomena such as black hole outflows, tidal disruption events, supernovae, gamma-ray bursts, and other energetic astrophysical sources. More recently, he has begun applying techniques developed in these fields to SETI experiments.

Dr. Bright completed an MSc in Physics at the University of Warwick and a DPhil in Astrophysics at the University of Oxford, followed by postdoctoral appointments at Northwestern University, the University of California, Berkeley, and the University of Oxford. His work combines cutting-edge observing, data analysis, and instrumentation, with particular experience in interferometric imaging and rapid-response radio observations.

At the Allen Telescope Array, Dr. Bright has led the development and commissioning of imaging capabilities, including calibration, performance validation, and science-ready data pipelines. As Project Scientist, he helps guide the ATA’s scientific strategy, expand its role in SETI, transient astronomy, and other areas of astrophysics, and support its continued evolution as a flexible, wide-field instrument for exploring the radio universe.
