Biography

Domenica Mediati is an intermedia artist, a Sessional Instructor in the Faculty of Education and the School of Creative Arts, and a Research Assistant at INCUBATOR Art Lab at the University of Windsor. Mediati completed her BFA at UWindsor in 2015 and her MFA at Wayne State University in 2018. She has exhibited her artwork at various venues in Portugal and New Mexico in the Windsor/Detroit region.

Domenica Mediati's artworks span painting, drawing, digital media, animation, and bioart practices. She creates landscapes and characters that reflect and interrogate human and non-human narratives, with a focus on microbiology. As a second-generation Italian-Canadian, Mediati delves into fear-based narratives rooted in the superstitions of her Italian heritage. She explores themes from folklore, nature, and microscopic life to confront and reinterpret our fears and phobias. Through this exploration, Mediati aims to repair her relationships and develop a deeper understanding and appreciation of the intricate web of life around us and beyond our planet.

Since 2019, Mediati has played a leadership role at INCUBATOR Art Lab, as a researcher, lab manager, and director of educational outreach programming. Mediati's research specializes in developing and delivering STEAM education workshops to university and school-aged students. INCUBATOR Art Lab is a bioart lab located in Windsor, Ontario, directed by Dr. Jennifer Willet (www.incubatorartlab.com/). This lab operates at the intersection of art, science, and ecology, functioning as both a physical and theoretical hub and establishing a new art/science laboratory at the University of Windsor.
