If you were to create a poem for an alien - how would you do it? Would you write things down? Would you tape an audio recording? Or maybe a video? The SETI AIR program’s Exoplanetary Poetry team is taking a broader approach. They are basing their poems on the most fundamental building block of all matter in the universe: molecular chemistry. In this month’s issue of SETI AIR News, read how the team is combining AI, exoplanet data, and science publications to create poems that you (or an alien) would be able to touch and smell.
As always, make sure to catch up on our SETI AIR’s news and events.
Clear skies,
Bettina
Project Update and Open Call
The Cosmic Consciousness Residency Invites Scientists and Artists to Join Exoplanetary Poetry
The recipients of the Cosmic Consciousness Residency Daniela Brill Estrada, Bart Kuipers, and Julie-Michèle Morin have made much progress with their extraordinary project Exoplanetary Poetry. The team is currently training an AI that will create poetry to be published both as a traditional book as well as a multi-sensory experience. Here is an excerpt from the project description:
Chemistry is the one thing we can be certain about sharing with other life-forms on other planets. we decided to train an artificial intelligence to act as an alien. using data from real exoplanet atmospheres (gathered by scientists and stored in databases like the NASA Exoplanet Archive), we’re creating a dataset of the molecules that might make up alien environments and by extension, alien bodies and minds. Then, we invite the ai to write poems with us, co-authoring texts that blend human imagination with otherworldly logic. We will map the sentences, words, and letters/syllables of the co-authored book of poetry back to chemical components and reactions and use these as the basis for creating chemical poems: controlled environments on display, in which different chemical substances in different states interact with each other creating visual sensations, smells, and textures for haptic sensations.
The team is inviting scientists and artists to contribute data, scientific texts, and poetry to their ethically sourced AI.

Mike von der Nahmer Selected for Xu Bing Space Art Residency Program
SETI AIR alumnus Mike von der Nahmer has been selected as a resident artist in the Xu Bing Space Art Residency Program, part of the Star Chain of Arts Project. His new project — ASPIRE: Student Visions in Orbit — will invite young people in Luxembourg to imagine the future of space through image and story.
This residency continues Mike’s long-standing commitment to bridging art and science, including past projects with the SETI Institute, the German Aerospace Center, and the Asteroid Day Festival.
