In the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI), scientists listen for signals from alien civilizations living around distant stars. If they find a signal, what should we say in reply? Can we realistically hope for mutual comprehension with an independently evolved species?

Douglas Vakoch, Ph.D., is Director of Interstellar Message Composition at the SETI Institute in Mountain View, California. He leads the SETI Institute's project to compose interstellar messages of the kind that may some day be sent in reply to a signal from extraterrestrials.
