Biography

Mike Evans is a Research Scientist at the Institute. He spent the first eighteen years of his research career working on the Cassini Mission to Saturn. He was an Imaging Team Associate as well as the Science Lead for both the Cross-Discipline Target Working Team (XD TWT) and Proximal Orbit Science Team (POST) before rounding out the Mission as the archiving Rings Discipline Legacy Lead. Among other things he was responsible for reducing all the small satellite astrometric images which were one for the inputs in the generation of regularly updated ephemerides for the saturnian system. On the software development side he wrote the early iterations of the data analysis package caviar. He  helped plan the observations of the narrow F ring and the many small satellites that are part of Saturn’s entourage. All the camera command instructions for ISS F ring observations were his work.

His research interests focus on the determination of the orbits of small saturnian satellites and the dynamics of Saturn’s narrow F ring, although he does dabble in more general planetary rings system topics.

At the end of the Cassini Mission Mike joined the SETI Institute, working at the Ring-Moon Systems Node of NASA’s Planetary data System. Initially his primary task is to transition the Cassini Optical Remote Sensing archived datasets from PDS3 into the newer PDS4 standard.
