Encoding Altruism
Until recently, SETI scientists have focused on ways we could create interstellar messages about basic mathematics, chemistry, physics, and astronomy—topics extraterrestrial astronomers would also know something about.
But how would we explain something about human psychology or describe our sense of ethics? How would we describe some of the ways that humans interact with one another, or some of humanity’s highest values?
Altruism provides a good case study for creating interstellar messages that say something about human behavior, as well as describing some of our basic notions of morality.
