What Design Can Do

SETI Institute Designer of Experiences Nelly Ben Hayoun will be speaking at the international Design Conference: What Design Can Do in Amsterdam on Thursday 8th May.

What Design Can Do celebrates the power of design and its problem-solving abilities. This two-day event in Amsterdam exposes design as a catalyst of change and renewal and a way of addressing the societal questions of our time. You can see details about the program here

Nelly Ben Hayoun has been called the ‘Willy Wonka of design and science’ and she is on a mission to bring chaos, subversion and disorder into the design and scientific worlds. Her aim is to give everyone the opportunity to experience the edges of our known universe, a realm that should not be reserved for scientists alone. Her studio is based in London, but the world is her place of work.

As an experience designer Ben Hayoun works with leading scientists and engineers to devise subversive events and experiences. Her most ambitious project to date is the International Space Orchestra (ISO), the world’s first orchestra of space scientists from NASA Ames Research Center, Singularity University, International Space University and the SETI Institute. Recordings of the orchestra have been launched into space.

Ben Hayoun is the Designer of Experiences at the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) Institute in California, and she is Head of Experiences at WeTransfer in the Netherlands. She also is a Visiting Professor at the Unknown Fields Division of the Architectural Association School of Architecture and a lecturer at Central Saint Martins and the Royal College of Art, all in London. On top of that she is a PhD candidate in Human Geography at Royal Holloway, University of London. In her spare time – is there any? – she is training to be an astronaut.

Nelly Ben Hayoun took her bachelor’s degree in Fashion Design from Olivier de Serres National College of Art and Design in Paris and her master’s degree in Design Interactions from the Royal College of Art in London. She received many awards and is a frequent speaker at international gatherings.
