Neil Armstrong (1930 - 2012)

One small step....

The Earth lost a great explorer and amazing American when Neil Armstrong passed away at age 82. His heroic landing on the Moon with only seconds of fuel remaining led to the first human presence on another world. For many people at the SETI Institute, his "One small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind" was an amazing moment in our lives.  When Armstrong stepped onto the Moon, he inspired generations of young people to pursue careers in science, engineering, and space exploration. Today, we remember his achievements, his grace, and humility. We remember Armstrong with respect and affection. He was a hero in every sense.

The people of the SETI Institute extend our sympathy to his family, and to the nation. All the world has experienced a great loss, and Armstrong is now a part of history. As the family requests, "the next time you walk outside on a clear night an see the moon smiling down at you, think of Neil Armstrong and give him a wink."
