KQED - Quest

Is anyone out there? For over 40 years scientists have been searching for extraterrestrial intelligence, but they’ve found nothing. Now the new Allen Telescope Array, a string of 350 radio telescopes, is being built 300 miles north of San Francisco and is breathing new life into the search. Find out why SETI scientists now say we might be hearing from ET sooner than you think.

TeamSETI now on Facebook!

Please visit our new TeamSETI Group page on Facebook!  There has been, even in my short tenure, an outcry from TeamSETI members to have a way to interact.  While we are currently working on a Net Community on our SETI Institute web site, with web 2.0 social interactions sites booming, we thought we should take advantage of this rapidly advancing technology.  The group is new, as am I so it is a little rough around the edges, but Elizabeth Pierson has stepped up to the plate, and done an outstanding job of getting us kicked off.

Adopt-A- Scientist Profile

Dale Andersen

No life is too extreme, and no environment too remote, for Dale Andersen. Dale has spent more than two dozen years investigating the microbes that inhabit such truly trying locales as the polar regions, Chile’s Atacama Desert, Death Valley, alpine lakes in British Columbia, and Siberia.

It takes a tough guy to research the toughest of environments – where perennial ice and permafrost make it hard for life to survive. But the extremophiles that live in these brutal environments are prototypes for life that might exist on other worlds. Dale is searching for aliens on Earth.

Check out Dale Andersen's website.

Meet your new TeamSETI Coordinator!

As I have recently joined the SETI Institute as the new TeamSETI and Annual Gifts Coordinator, I thought I should take this opportunity introduce myself, and give you a brief bio.

I spent most of my adult life serving in the US Army as a Signals Intelligence Non-Commissioned Officer.   For over 12 years I served with the 82nd Airborne Division, 3rd Special Forces Group and 2nd Infantry Division.  I have had deployments to the Far East, Middle East, and Africa

I left the military to peruse an opportunity as the Executive Director for NC and later NY StateWatch, a state legislative news service, where I was responsible for building relationships with lobbyists and state legislators.  I then took the position of Database Manager for Ravenscroft School (a non-profit private school) in Raleigh NC, where I assisted in managed stewardship for gifts received.

I have a wife and two children, a son and a daughter.  My wife grew up in San Francisco, and her family is still here.

I am very excited and feel honored to have the opportunity to serve the SETI Institute and the TeamSETI Membership.  I look forward to working with all of you as we continue to fund the amazing research done here at the SETI Institute.

Sincerely,

Robert F. Dusablon

AbSciCon FREE EVENT at 7:30 pm Wednesday, April 16th

Alien Worlds Safari:  A Tour Through a Universe of Possibilities

The event is free and open to all.  It begins at 7:30 pm Wednesday, April 16th at the Santa Clara Convention Center Auditorium.

Astronomers now estimate that our galaxy could harbor tens of billions of Earth-size planets.  How many of these might be host to life?  We still can’t say, but many researchers are optimistic that Earth is not the only world to have spawned living things.

This public event will bring together leading scientists as they describe their visions of the sort of alien worlds that await our discovery, based on solid scientific discoveries we’ve made on Earth.  From slime worlds to the highly engineered environments of advanced civilizations, our experts will explore a mind-bending range of possibilities.

The event will be moderated by Dr. Seth Shostak, astronomer at the SETI Institute and host of the popular radio show, “Are We Alone?”  Panelists include Dr. Tori Hoehler, microbiologist at NASA’s Astrobiology Institute; Prof. T. C. Onstott, Princeton University geoscientist and one of Time magazine’s 100 most influential people for 2008; Prof. Peter Ward, University of Washington paleontologist and popular science author; and Dr. Jill Tarter, astronomer and Director for the Center for SETI Research.
