Post Doctoral ResearcherPosition Description:
The SETI Institute is looking for a dynamic individual to join a collaboration between the SETI Institute, the NASA Ames Astrochemistry Laboratory, and Leiden University in the Netherlands. Using the extensive infrared spectroscopic data set collected in the Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH) Ames Database, the candidate will develop an updated version of an Infrared Fluorescence model. The new model will be used to analyze the ubiquitous PAH IR emissions from objects within our Galaxy to galaxies across the Universe. This will yield improved knowledge about the size, structures, and charge states of the PAHs present in the ISM. Information resulting from this study is a new probe of conditions within the various emission zones.
Responsibilities:
Develop a new updated version of the Infrared Fluorescence model, which will be used to interpret the infrared spectra of interstellar objects. Provide detailed comparisons between model IR emission spectra of the PAHs in the database and the astronomical observations to determine which molecular structures, molecular sizes and ionization states are the most relevant.
Education:
PhD in Astrophysics
Required Skills:
• Experience in spectroscopy, molecular physics, and computer skills.
• Demonstrated research ability.
• Track record of performing theoretical development.
• Excellent verbal and presentation skills.
• Demonstrated skill in writing scientific papers.
• Capable of working independently.
• Excellent interpersonal skills to establish cooperative, tactful, and effective working relationships with coworkers.
Special Requirements:
• Some travel may be required.
Examples of Job Tasks:
• Read and understand scientific papers.
• Develop and implement new computer programs.
• Present results at scientific meetings.
• Write scientific papers.
Ongoing Expectations:Effective development and implementation of a new updated Infrared Fluorescence model, and its application to the interpretation of astronomical observations.
The mission of the SETI Institute is to explore, understand and explain the origin, nature and prevalence of life in the universe. We believe we are conducting the most profound search in human history – to discover our beginnings and our place among the stars. The SETI Institute is a private, nonprofit organization dedicated to scientific research, education, and public outreach. Founded in 1984, the Institute today employs over 140 scientists, educators and support staff. The SETI Institute is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
